Astro, "Fracture Composition"
Three live spirals recorded in various parts of the world. The title track, recorded in Istanbul in Turkey, is a tad disappointing to this Astro fan. Harsh and loud but somewhat unimaginative and pedestrian, favouring less of the features this project is known for but not really reaching out for anything new, rather just letting the synths and other instruments grind and grunt with some modulation. Second piece "Live At UFO Factory", in Tokyo, however, redeems Astro's power with large and loud spraying, cosmic hiss and chasmic roars, feedback-sounding synth leads and delayed effects. It sounds like it would have been extremely impressive to have experienced at the time. The final spiral "Japanese Royal Blue Part 3" is in a similar vein but with less white noise and more of the detail of the sounds allowed through the distortion. Still with the higher synth sounds and echo effects that make Astro what it is. A connection, then, between the cosmic synth style and Harsh Noise style that Hasegawa has established his name within, not always successfully on this album though but still with some redemption.
